Mickey Mouse and the Foreign Legion

I have a copy of a wonderful collection of out-of-print Mickey Mouse comics from the 1930s and 40s.

The strips are all signed by Walt Disney, but were in fact drawn by Floyd Gottfredson, a young Disney animator who inherited the newspaper strip from Walt after the first few strips and continued to draw Mickey's newspaper adventures into the 1960s.

Mickey Mouse was a favourite comic strip of Franklin D. Roosevelt among other important figures of the mid-20th Century. (Benito Mussolini, for instance, reportedly forbid the publication of all American comic strips in Italy except for Mickey Mouse. Hitler, on the other hand, hated him.)

I'll be posting the rest of this story and others from the collection in the future as time permits.

Y'know, I think you showed me some of Gottfredson's stuff way back when... Not bad, but as you know, I'm a Carl Barks man myself and would rather fight than switch!

Also, why do I get the feeling this adventure will end with Mickey sleeping in Pluto's doghouse because he forgot to tell Minnie where he was all that time?

Steve, I'm a fan of your mom. I've added you to my Artists on the Web file. I'll be back later.

Thought I would promote your blog on my site as I had blog block. So you may get some people dropping by. By the way my computer is up and running again it was two blown cables, but I am going tomorrow to investigate a new one. By the way I am VicGrace the Cariboo Ponderer. I don't use my real name on the internet.

Hey there. Dropped by via the link from your mom's blog. Good stuff. I added a link to your blog on my blog and I'll keep checking back in. I've started to include some of my strips in the header of my blog...nowhere near the quality of what you produce, simply designed to get people to chuckle. Stop by sometime if you'd like.

I came by on your Mom's directions too and meant to post a comment earlier today and then, got side-tracked. Then tonight, while reading Gene's blog, I clicked your link on from his page and realized - oh my - I forgot to go back and comment on Steve's blog!

Nice job! Your Mom - obviously and for good reason - is very proud of you, just as all mothers should be able to be of their sons!

I know you posted this a while back but I stumbled on it now and I'm hooked. Did you ever post the rest of this comic? It's great!

Hi Mark,

Sorry, I never got around to posting the rest of this. I'll try to do it some time in the future, but otherwise, the name of the book is Walt Disney Best Comics Mickey Mouse. ISBN 0-89659-005-4 It's out of print, but you should be able to find it on Amazon or elsewhere online.
